Say-It-and-Move-It
In order to become aware of the sounds in words we are going to play a game where we will use counters on a mat to separate sounds, then put them back together again.
This is a Say-It-and-Move-It mat. Do you see this circle at the top of the page? This is "home base" where we keep all the counters when we are not using them. This arrow is important. The counters are moved from home base to rest on the line. The arrow goes from left to right reminding us to put the sounds back together to say the word. I'll use the word "mom." The first sound is /m/. The next sound is /o/. The last sound is /m/. Then I say them all together (slide finger): /m/ /o/ /m/, mom.
Now let's try the word "miss" together: /m/ (move counter), /i/ (move counter), /s/ (move counter). We'll slide our finger along the arrow while saying the sounds.
If Correct: Great.
If Incorrect: Say /mmm/ (move counter). Now say /iii/ (move counter). And now /sss/ (move counter). Now say them all together (slide finger): miss.
Now it's your turn. The next word is "red."
If Correct: Good work. Let's try some more.
If Incorrect: What's the first sound in the word "red" (move counter)? The middle sound? The last sound? Now say them together (slide finger).
