Three Words, New Word
PSF - Phonemic Awareness Segment and Blend Phonemes
The purpose of this activity is for the student to practice blending three sounds to make new words. The student will hear three short words. The student then says the initial sounds of each of the three words and then blends them together to make a new word.
Warm Up

We are going to make a new word by listening to the sounds in other words. You will hear three words. When I give you a word, say the first sound only. Then blend the three sounds together to make a new word.

Let's try one. We'll start with the words "ball," "apple," and "top." The first sound in "ball" is /b/. The first sound in "apple" is /a/. The first sound in "top" is /t/. The three sounds are /b/ /a/ /t/. When I put /b/ /a/ /t/ together, the new word is "bat."

Now try another. The first word is "ball." What's the first sound in "ball"? /b/ The second word is "Ed." What's the first sound in "Ed"? /e/ The third word is "dog." What's the first sound in "dog"? /d/ The new word is /b/ /e/ /d/, bed.

Remember to only use the first sound in each word. Then put the first sounds together to make a new word.

Now it's your turn to try one. Here are your three words: girl, itch, violin. What are the first sounds? What's the new word?
If Correct: Good. The sound at the beginning of "girl" is /g/. The sound at the beginning of "itch" is /i/. The sound at the beginning of "violin" is /v/. The 3 sounds are /g/ /i/ /v/, give.

If Incorrect: What's the sound at the beginning of "girl"? And the sound at the beginning of "itch"? And the sound at the beginning of "violin"? What are the 3 sounds? What's the new word?

Correct: /g/ /i/ /v/, give
Try to get a correct response.

Now it's your turn. Try the words "dog," "up," and "kite." What's the first sound? What's the second sound? What's the third sound? What's the new word?
If Correct: Good. The sound at the beginning of "dog" is /d/. The sound at the beginning of "up" is /u/. The sound at the beginning of "kite" is /k/. Together we have /d/ /u/ /k/, duck.

If Incorrect: Let's look at it again. What's the sound at the beginning of "dog"? What's the sound at the beginning of "up"? What's the sound at the beginning of "kite"? What are the three sounds? What is the new word?

Correct: /d/ /u/ /k/, duck
If incorrect, go back to an easier activity.
