Initial Letter Exchange
NWF - Alphabetic Principle
Decode CVC Words
The purpose of this activity is to give the student an opportunity to practice decoding words with the consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) word pattern. You will show the student a word with the CVC pattern, and then give a consonant card to substitute in the initial position to spell a new word. The student will read the original word, and the new word.

Materials: Word pages and consonant cards (see the Downloads area)

We are going to practice reading words. I'm going to show you a word and ask you to read it out loud. After you read the word, I'll give you a letter. Place the letter over the first letter of the word to make a new word. Then read the new word out loud.

Watch me do one. On the page, I see the word "cat". I say "cat". Now I have this letter "b". I place the letter "b" in place of "c". I read the new word...

cat -> _at -> b__ -> bat
Show the first word strip and then demonstrate substituting the initial consonant.

Now let's try one together. Look at the word and read it out loud. Here's the new letter. What's the new word?
bad -> _ad -> m__ -> mad
Show the next word strip and after the student reads the word, hand over the consonant card.

Now it's your turn. Read this word.

Here's a new letter. What's the new word?

If Correct: Good. The words are "rag" and "wag."

If Incorrect: Let's look at it again. Read w-a-g. What letter is this? Where does this letter go? What's the new word?

rag-> _ag -> w__ -> wag
Show the "rag" word strip.
Give the student the "w" card.
Assist if necessary.

Let's try another one. Read the word. Here is the letter d. What's the new word?
If Correct: Good. The words are "cap" and "nap."

If Incorrect: Let's look at it again. Read the word. What letter is this? Where does this letter go? What's the new word?

rag -> _ap -> n__ -> nap
Correct: cap, nap
Discontinue if the student got both warm-ups incorrect.
