Syllable Pocket Chart
FSF - Phonemic Awareness Segment and Blend Syllables
The student will practice orally segmenting words into syllables by placing a picture card in the appropriate numbered row. You will need a syllable chart with at least four rows (you can also use a pocket chart), cards numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4, and picture cards of words with one to four syllables (see the Downloads area).
Warm Up
Download your
own printable syllable chart and picture cards

Look at this syllable chart. Do you see the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the end of the rows? These numbers are for the number of syllable parts in the words illustrated on the picture cards.

We will place each picture card in the row where it belongs. I'll show you how to decide where the picture card belongs.

Watch me do one. This picture card is a _____ (e.g., mouse).

I know that this word _____ (e.g., mouse) has one part, or syllable. So, I'm going to put it in the row with the number 1.

Select a one-syllable picture.

Let's do one together. This is a picture of _____. Think about how many syllables it has. Say the word in parts and count the claps. Which row should it go in?
If Correct: Good. ___ goes in the row with 1 because it has one syllable. Let's try another one. The next words might have more than one syllable.

If Incorrect: Listen to the word again (say word and clap once). There's just one syllable. So which row is for one-syllable words?

Select another one-syllable picture.
Use the same one-syllable picture.

Now it's your turn. This is a picture of a __ (e.g., muffin). Count the syllables in the word ___.
If Correct: Good. The word ___ goes in the row with 2 because it has two syllables. Let's see if the pictures are in the correct rows. Say the words with me and clap the syllables.

If Incorrect: Listen to the word again (say the word and clap with each syllable). There are two syllables in _____. Which row is for two-syllable words?

Select a two-syllable word this time.
Wait for a correct response.

Activities

Using the picture cards, try to do 10 or more words with the student. Remember to say the name of each picture so the student isn't thinking of a different word.
