Onset-Rime Knock Knock
FSF - Phonemic Awareness Segment and Blend Onset-Rimes
The purpose of this activity is for the student to practice orally segmenting and blending onset-rimes. The student will knock on the tabletop for each onset or rime segment of a spoken word.
Warm Up

Words can be divided into two parts: the first sound, and all the sounds that follow. For the first sound, knock on the table. For the remaining sounds, turn your hand over and open it.

Watch what I do with the word "dog." The first part of "dog" is /d/. The second part is /og/.

When I say /d/, I'm going to knock on the table. When I say /og/, I'm going to turn my fist over and open it so that my palm is up, like this.

Watch me: /d/ (knock), /og/ (palm up)

Practice motions with student.
Model for the student.

Let's do one together. The word is "mat." First we knock and say /m/. Then we open our hand palm up and say /at/.
If Correct: Great job! We knocked for /m/ and opened our palms for /at/. You're ready to try another word.

If Incorrect: Try to do what I do. Mat: /m/ (knock), /at/ (palm up).

Try it with the student this time.
Try to get a correct response before proceeding.

Now it's your turn. The word is "cat." Knock for the first part, and open your hand palm up for the second part. Get ready. Go.
If Correct: Great. You're ready to play Onset-Rime Knock Knock by yourself.

If Incorrect: Try it again. Knock and say the first sound. Now turn your hand over and say the rest of the word. Try the word "cat."

Try to get a correct response before proceeding.
