Name that Initial Sound
FSF - Phonemic Awareness Identify Initial Sounds
The purpose of this activity is for students to practice identifying the first sound in words.
Warm Up

We're going to play a game where we will separate the beginning sound from the other sounds in a word. I'll say a word, and then you tell me the first sound in that word.

Listen to me. I'll do one for you. The first word is "sit." What's the first sound in "sit"? The first sound I hear in "sit" is /s/.

Let's do one together. The next word is "sun": /sss…un/. What's the first sound in "sun"?

That's right. The first sound in "sun" is /s/.

Correct: /s/

Now it's your turn. The next word is "fun." What's the first sound in "fun"?
If Correct: That's right. The first sound in "fun" is /f/.

If Incorrect: Listen to me say it again: fun, /fff…un/. What's the very first sound you hear in "fun"?

Correct: /f/
Lengthen the first sound.

Now you try one. The next word is "kid." What's the first sound in "kid"?
If Correct: Good. The first sound in "kid" is /k/. You're ready for more words.
